Mindfulness and meditation are increasingly recognized as effective ways to combat stress and promote wellness.
Broadly defined, mindfulness is bringing one’s attention to the present moment, acknowledging thoughts and feelings without judgment. A growing body of research shows that mindfulness promotes improved attention, emotional regulation, reduced stress and anxiety and greater compassion. BTI Founder Norma Neumann-Johnson has been incorporating mindfulness and brain research into education since 2006, when she had her social worker begin integrating it into student activities at Breakthrough Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut. BTI’s courses reflect her experience, her training as a Certified Mindfulness Instructor by Mindful Schools of Oakland, CA, and also the latest brain research by Dr. Dan Siegel and others. |
The discourse that takes place with my students and even within my family has changed. I take a step back and assess the situation and approach the conversation in a way that allows for the other person to be “heard,” their feelings acknowledged and working on compromises. The STEP Program allows to build bonds and connections with others through compromises or working together.
